CVRPC Leads Road Erosion Training for Partners
With the passage of Vermont’s Municipal Roads General Permit came a new field inventory requirement to inspect all hydrologically connected road segments for erosion issues.

What is a hydrologically connected road segment?  It’s any municipally owned roadway that parallels or bisects a surface water; be it a lake, pond, river, or stream. The inventory of these segments, appropriately called a “Road Erosion Inventory”, looks at the road's cross section including the crown, ditches and culverts. The inspection looks for the causes of erosion and considers appropriate best management practices to prevent erosion.

In early June CVRPC staff, with assistance from VT ANR DEC, held a field training for a new inventory application used to conduct the road erosion inventories. The application, which was developed by VT ANR DEC staff, utilizes a web map to show all hydrologically connected road segments and a digital survey form to record the inventory attributes. Twelve people attended the training in Roxbury. Since the training CVRPC staff have used the application in two communities. Four more inventories are scheduled for later this summer. The application is a great step forward and makes the inspection easy to complete.
CVRPC hosts Planning & Zoning Roundtables
CVRPC hosted three planning and zoning roundtables throughout the late Spring of this year. Local officials and volunteer board members from seven towns participated. Robust discussions were had on a number of topics including the Open Meeting Law; The Essentials of Land Use Planning and Zoning; and Best Practices, including collaboration and coordination between Development Review Boards and Planning Commissions during zoning updates. The roundtables will resume this Fall. Future topics include tools rural communities can use to address challenges for plan implementation.

Contact Clare Rock at rock@cvregion.com to suggest additional topics for the upcoming roundtables.
